What is Underwriting?

Underwriting is a way of supporting KSSU, a non-profit, non-commercial educational radio station, at Sacramento State University. By definition, underwritting is the on-airidentification of individuals, corporations or businesses who donate funds that help pay the cost of program production.

How can Underwriting benefit my business?

While underwriting is not "advertising," it can still provide your business with some of the same exposure as commercial advertising while also allowing for social benefits that traditional advertising can not provide.

•Wide range of audience

KSSU's listeners are a diverse group of people ranging from teens to senior citizens and include target audiences that include ethnic and social minorities who are overlooked as a demographic by commercial broadcasters: KSSU can help you reach all of these audiences. KSSU Programmers can work with you to place your acknowledgment on a KSSU show that will best reach your target audience.

•Low rates enable you to establish year-round presence

Businesses benefit from long-term visibility; the low cost associated with underwriting with KSSU allows a business to establish a year-round presence, yet have ample funds left for special promotions in other media.

•Demonstrate your community concern

Supporting KSSU shows that your business is interested in contributing to the quality of student life in Sacramento and surrounding communities.

•Multiple acknowledgements

Our low rates not only include acknowledgments on our KSSU.com live broadacast, but we also acknowledge our sponsors with contact information in writing on KSSU.com and KSSU.org. If a company has a website we will post a link free of charge.

  2. Brand name of products (maximum of 3)
  3. Products or services offered or sold (maximum of 3)

What is prohibited?

  1. Comparisons and endorsements

What contract lengths are required?

There are no contract lengths required! This allows for sponsorship that best fits your budget.

How is the underwriting acknowledgment made?

The Sponsor will work with a member of the KSSU Underwriting Department to find an area of programming that will best suit the needs of said sponsor. The spot will be played sometime during the scheduled hour by a KSSU DJ.

The Sponsor will submit suggested copy of the announcement to the KSSU underwriting staff for editing and review. We must remain within the FCC's guidelines so some changes may be made to submitted copy. The revised copy will be sent back to the business to be approved. Once the copy is approved by the business and the KSSU Underwriting Director, the copy will be sent to the Production Department where a professional pre-produced recording of your acknowledgment will be made. The recording will be placed in the studio database to be played by a DJ.

How will I know if my acknowledgment ran?

At the end of each month you can choose to receive a log of when your spots were run, signed off by the DJ who played your acknowledgment.
