“Around the Dial Are you Listening,” David Brumfield, The Hornet- First article about KXPR possibly gaining second frequency and former KERS CSUS student radio in the seventies (shut down in 1974- Professor Roger Walter noted as station faculty advisor).

CSUS President Donald Gerth gives ‘State of the University Address.’ Jim Bolt asks Gerth why there is currently no student run radio station on the campus.

Letter from Steven T. Lawrence, President, ASI sent to Robert Jones, Vice President, University Affairs informing Jones of student group interested in student radio. Letter is sent after Jim Bolt & Chris Prosio meet Steven Lawrence to discuss how to establish a student run radio station.

Letter from Steven T. Lawrence, President, ASI sends to David Martin, Chair, Communications Studies Dept. soliciting feedback/assistance. The letter was sent as a result of the meeting with Jim Bolt and Chris Prosio in October.

First Associated Broadcasting Club meeting held (50 students attend). Jill Interline organizes meeting and meets Jim Bolt and Chris Prosio, who latter officially found and lead the club.

“No Student Radio Station – No Fair,” The Hornet- Opinion piece touting the benefits of student-run radio (educational tool, music format variety, CSU community relevance, etc.). Article goes on to talk about KXPR and its lack of involvement with CSUS students and CSUS community.
4/20/90
The Associated Broadcasting Club is approved to become an official CSUS Campus Organization. Linda Rhodes, from the Communication Studies Department, becomes the club’s faculty advisor.
4/24/90
The first Music Madness Marathon kicks off at 10:00 AM on the South Lawn of the University Union.
4/27/90
“Gerth,” The Hornet- CSUS President Donald Gerth gave an interview to The Hornet were he was asked if student money was used to finance KXPR. He stated that KXPR is almost entirely self-supporting and that it only receives about $50,000 of state money. He also states that ‘I thing students ought to have a radio station. And I am probably going to say to some of our people in the fairly near future, let’s go get a student radio station.’

Letter from Luis Camera, Student Activities Advisor for Clubs and Organizations, sent to Jim Bolt informing Bolt that the Associate Broadcasting Club’s application for recognition as a campus organization has been approved. ABC now as access to campus club resources such as mail, room reservations, etc. Note: Although the ABC application was signed for approval on 4/20/90, the approval was officially recorded on 5/1/90.

“CSUS students want a radio station to call their own,” Tim Grieve, The Sacramento Bee- Article discusses the ABC’s efforts to gain a student-run radio station and the history of student radio at CSUS (KERS) and the introduction of KXPR public radio. Jim Bolt states that KXPR has nothing to do with students and how numerous universities, junior colleges, and even area high schools have student-run radio stations. KXPR Station Manager, Charles Starzynski discusses how KXPR is meant to serve the greater community. Robert Jones agrees and discusses the public service component of the university. CSUS administrators agree they would like to see an academically supervised student station soon, per David Martin, Chair, Communication Studies. Rick Miller, ASI President-Elect states he believes the second frequency should go to the students. KXPR and University officals oppose the idea and Starzynski is quoted as saying “Medical students don’t start out doing neurosurgery.” Options for student-radio are mentioned including carrier-current or cable broadcasts.

“Static”- The first Associated Broadcasting Club newsletter discusses establishment of carrier-current station, Access Cable training classes in December and subsequent on-air D.J.s at Access Cable, a recap of past events including the first Music Madness Marathon, Pat Varney’s unofficial dee-jaying the University Union Birthday Party Dance, fundraising concert in the works, Larry Salazar, Promotions Director and faculty advisor, Linda Rhodes are thanked for getting the club involved with Access Cable and Ron Cooper (Director of Access Cable). The newsletter also discusses student radio history at CSUS and the carrier-current proposal that was developed by ABC and presented to Robert Jones, Vice President of University Affairs, by Jim Bolt and Chris Prosio.

“New semester brings campus radio to CSUS,” Rachel Orvino, The Hornet- Student-run radio carrier-current to be up and running by spring 1990. Studios are to be on second floor of library. The funding for the station will come from university funds. The transmission system will cost $9,625. ABC members have started radio training courses at Access Sacramento and will begin broadcasting on Access Cable Channel 63. Jim Bolt states that he wants the station to be as ‘slick and professional’ as possible.

“Behold, the land of music,” Jim Bolt, The Hornet- Opinion piece that recounts student-radio history at CSUS and is told in semi-medieval speak. “Students could journey to the station on quests for knowledge and freedom,” is a featured quote.
2/12/91
“On-campus radio station will bring cutting ‘edge’ to music in Sacramento,” Rachel Orvino, The Hornet- KEDG broadcast is delayed due to university officials awaiting an engineering report from LPB Inc. (the company that is setting up the transmitters). The KEDG shows on Access Cable, Channel 63 on Television and KCBL 88.7 on cable FM, are highlighted. Broadcasts have been taking place every Wednesday from 2:00 to 4:00 PM since Christmas break. Basic KEDG staff management positions and station format is also discussed.

“Jim Bolt: THE MAN AND THE MUSIC,” Holly Pipione, The Hornet- Article on Jim Bolt, his passion for music, and the reason he, and Chris Prosio, formed the Associated Broadcasting Club. Bolt states he doesn’t see radio as a career, he simply saw an educational need and championed the cause.

“The Best Of CSUS,” The Hornet- Student votes for best of segment. KEDG voted third Best Radio Station (15% of votes) after 93 Rock (23%) and KWOD (18%). Best Dance Club section included Panic, Cattle Club, and Club Gnaw among others. Best Local Band section included Tesla, Thin White Rope, Deftones, and The PopeAlopes. The Best Music Store section included The Beat!, Tower, and The Music Review.

“More Delays For CSUS Radio,” Rachel Orvino, The Hornet- Article discusses technical problems with the transmission equipment and installation issues which have delayed KEDG’s broadcasting. Spencer Freund, director of Computing Communication and Media at University Media Services doubts the station will be broadcasting before May, but notes it will definitely be up and running by fall. In the interim, KEDG is going to provide mobile deejaying service for the California Intercollegiate Press Association conference at CSUS. KEDG also joined the NACB (The National Association of College Broadcasters). D.J. Willis, KEDG Program Director, stated that ASI President, Rick Miller, has proposed that KEDG soley be affiliated with ASI. This is pending approval from Deano f Students, George Wayne. Managerial aspects of KEDG are being handled bo a board of directors. Karen Misener, Assitatn Music Director, and Jim Bolt, Associate Broadcasting Club President, downplay the musical format of the station and the recent student debate in the Hornet and talk about the benefits of true college, student-run radio.

“Founding Members Graduating, Red Tape Forces Delay of Campus Radio Station,” Rachel Orvino,, The Hornet- Article details why KEDG will not broadcast this semester. Associated Broadcasting President, Jim Bolt and Vice President, Chris Prosio, are both graduating. KEDG Program Director, D.J. Willis said it will be good to have the summer to work out any problems with the station set-up, but he was disappointed with the delay. The delay is due to technical difficulties combined with the public bidding policy. “It’s frustrating, and sad because Jim is graduating and he is the brain-child behind the station.” said Willis. “I’m frustrated by the delay, but I was starting the station for other people, not just for me. We (Chris Prosio and myself) saw a void that sparked personal interest and we tried to fill it.” Bolt said. “I’m disappointed as well. I had my hopes up that I could do at least one on-air shift at the station I helped to start.” stated Chris Prosio. KEDG continues to broadcast over Access Cable at KCBL 88.7 FM and programming is expanding until the campus station is operational.

2nd Annual 24 Hour Music Madness Marathon Promotional Flyer and Music Schedule- Flyer highlights guest D.J.’s from dance clubs Metro, Cattle Club, Panic, Beat Gallery and Industrial Division. Local band acoustic sets, specialty shows, and music giveaways are also highlighted. The event also involves a food and clothing drive for Loaves and Fishes and the Salvation Army.

KEDG “The Edge” Budget Proposal- D. J. Willis, Program Director, with the help of other KEDG Directors, and staff, compiled extensive line item budgets for both on-air and production studios. D. J. also included proposal included a 1 time office setup proposal and an annual operating budget. Setup costs were approximately $75,000 and the annual operating budget was approximately $20,000.

“Hit and run accident kills KEDG program director, “Michael Piple Jr., The Hornet- Article announces death of KEDG Program Director, D.J. Willis. The death was the result of a hit and run accident that occurred on June 13th, 1991. D.J. was on a scooter, with friend, Sally Rivers. Sally suffered a broken leg in the accident. D.J.’s background in radio and TV is profiled as well as his involvement with KEDG. “He knew more than anyone else. He had more experience than anyone here, and he was always willing to help,” KEDG Production Director Mickie Priest said.

“Student radio no longer myth as KEDG hits airwaves,” Michael Piple Jr., The Hornet- Article announces the start of KEDG broadcasting on campus. The station began broadcasting on Tuesday, September 10th, 1991 on 530 AM. The signal could be received in the residence halls, Dining Commons, and the residence halls parking lot. The EDGE (KEDG) broadcasts alternative rock and specialty shows that include hardcore punk, heavy metal, and industrial dance music. “The 26 disc jockeys provide CSUS with radio unavailable anywhere else in Sacramento.” The article goes on to talk about CSUS giving higher priority to KXPR and KXJZ Public Radio and how there is still no on-air student involvement in either. Jim Bolt, Interim Program Director, said “The two university stations don’t offer the right kind of internships to CSUS students.”
Sept. ’91
KEDG- The Edge Air Shift Schedule- One of the first on-air schedules for broadcasting from the CSUS Library on the 530 AM band. Shifts were three hours and broadcasting was from 7:45 AM to 11:00 PM weekdays, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Fridays, 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Saturdays, and 1:00 PM to 10:00 PM on Sundays. Disc Jockeys on the schedule include Dave Biondi, Karen Misener, Pat Varney, Dan Reynoso, Jim Bolt, Mickie Priest, Dave Leon, Larry Salizar, Shari Haskel, and Andy Spackman.
Fall ’91
KEDG Logo - The EDGE, California State University, Sacramento, KEDG, 530 AM. Jim Bolt originally designed the logo in early 1991. ‘Mike,’ as the screaming head silhouette became known, was the official KEDG mascot and was used in all promotional materials, stationary, t-shirts, and other designs. The KEDG offices were originally in temporary buildings that Peak Adventures used to occupy. These buildings were across the street from the University Union. On-air and production studies for KEDG remained in two rooms in the library.

1992
KSSU Logo Stationary- Official KSSU (formerly KEDG) stationary with 89.7 FM frequency and contact information. KEDG was sent a ‘cease and desist’ letter from a commercial radio station using the call sign KEDG. Although there likely would have been no real basis for a legal conflict as KEDG was a non-commercial, college radio station, KEDG management decided to change the call sign to play it safe. After all, we wanted to be around for the future!
